Hockey is a violent sport, and it's hard to imagine that for a long time, players played it without any form of head protection whatsoever. Who cares that they sling around a hard rubber puck at over 100 miles per hour? If you were a goalie before the 60s, you had to stay in there and wear it in the face. That takes a different breed. 

Even today, regular players only wear a visor, and taking a bruising puck to the face is a right of passage. You're not a real hockey player if you haven't lost a tooth or two, right?
